Basecamp alternatives

Since I run Linux I was wondering if there is any alternative to Basecamp that would allow me to create routes/tracks and waypoints at a minimum.

winGDB3 can be used to translate the kml/kmz files saved from google earth

Mapquest.com allows you to create routes and upload them to a connected garmin gps.

Just curious. Is there any way to use Google maps to create waypoints and save them like you can in Google Earth?

What would happen if you made routes from destination to destination using waypoints as the destination..?
other that having a lot of routes...

Don't know. I tend to not make routes but instead prefer waypoints. I just load the waypoints into my Montana and tell it to route. Since I normally don't follow a fixed route anyways this works for me as I still get to where I'm going. Always know where I'll end up, never know what way I'll take to get there.

I've used this site with good results when I don't have BaseCamp.

You can download directly to your connected Montana the GPX file with the Waypoints (10 max/file) and the Route. I think the owner is working on having a Track option as well.

Have that downloaded. Going to need to play with it to figure out how to use it.

It will look like it only cuts tracks (prunes them) until you find the secret "edit mode" button.

It looks more powerful but I'm still searching for the secret button.

Under Linux, you can install an old version of Mapsource using wine.. :)

Does it find the Montana and allow upload/download of waypoints, tracks etc?

Exchange of Waypoints, track and routes works with my Oregon 450, i suppose it works also with the Montana..

Probably would work with the Montana. Only problem is I can't find it to download and install. The one on Garmin's website is the upgrader and needs Mapsource installed already.

QLandkarte comes to mind.

Otherwise, I am successfully using an old WinXP inside VirtualBox for several years now. Works flawlessly, including USB support.

Yes, QlandKarte works, but not with Garmin Maps and, most important, the route calculation it's only online.. (don't know if the route calculation has changed in the new releases).

And.. yes, you can run XP in virtualbox, but on old netbooks is terribly slow.. with wine you run only the executable you need (in this case Mapsource) and not a full OS
But can be a solution in case of USB troubles.. :)

I do use Virtualbox for Win7. (Have a Dell XPS14z with the I5, so should have more than enough horse power.) Figured I could use QLandKarte with OSM maps to make routes or tracks and way point.

I have found that my latest version of Mapsource does not communicate well with the Montana. I do nearly all my planning in Mapsource and switch to Basecamp to move the files to and from the Montana.

But there is an alternative you can create gpx files in Mapsource and copy those to the Montana and vice versa.

The problem with reading files from the Montana is that you can't tell very well what is actually in a file.
