radiogram (remember those?) advice

time to have a dung out....

thinking of putting this family treasure on TardMe...

been in the family since before i was born.....

any idea how old it is/when it was manufactured?

value?

2ZB, and 2YC, (third row on left) were Wellington radio stations when I was a boy.

You got that right. Hell I worked at 2XG when I left school as a technician. (It was the eighties, honest) By then it was called 2ZG though, so I suppose that does not count. That particular one was one of DRECO's later models. They were still making new ones until at least the early seventies. 2XG changed to 2ZG in the mid sixties.

God I feel old

But that one is so tidy it may actually be worth something to a collector

But given it has the frequency handbook and the operating instructions paper on the turntable.....

I used to work with a guy who liked to collect these sorts of things and restore them (mostly older ones) but he would have done back flips for that. Those battle scars are pretty minor really, and could easily be fixed in a restoration I would guess. He worked on things much worse than that....

Like you say, with the manuals and all....

Now you just need to find someone with the right fetish. Trade me as good as anywhere I would suspect.

I don't know shit, but the radio looks 60's, but the cabinet and turn table look 70's to me.

As said, if you find the right person, they'd pay big coin for that.

well it was all made at the same time of course....

Nah,she's '60's man - that's a stacker turntable,supposed to be for 45's,but you could stack up LP's and have music all night.Some LP's were made to stack - so one record was side 1 and 3,the other 2 and 4...so it would play side 1,drop side 2,then you flip it over for 3 and 4.

And it's a Steriogram,a step above a mere radiogram.It'll have valves! It's worth 2/6d.

Cool, it's older than me then. I was more of a cassette deck kind of guy.

I bet some rich kids owned two sets, so they could load them up for continuous play, no flip.

And you'd know how good the party was by the number of coins you had to tape to the tone arm to stop it skipping tracks when everyone started dancing...

2ZG was the ONLY radio station in Gisborne as I grew up. The first local competitor was 89FM.

Incidentally, edit: 945khz is still operative, and is used by Aircraft for direction finding to Gisborne.

There were actually two transmitters in the transmitter building. Out at Wainui beach. 2ZG had an AWA black 2 (kw, 1kw carrier, 1kw modulation) and National radio had a Toshiba transmitter (1314kHz??). National radio did not count when I was growing up either. I only reaslise that it can be pretty interesting at times now that I am an old fogey. I had left town, (and moved to Wellington) by the time 89FM and that new fangled modulation came along

I used to fix the Dreco's at times before I started with broadcasting when I worked Ellis and Bull, (I was still at school) on Grey street right across the road from the studio.

Wre used to have a La Gloria. ours was similar but a bit more rounded and had a reel to reel tape as well. Had a great sound.

Radio about 1966-67.It has 1ZD,Tauranga,started in 1961,has 2XA Wanganui on your dial,changed to 2ZW in 1968,so before that date.2XG(2ZG) went from 1010khz I think to 1060 in the late 60s so again before the late 60s,has 2YW on 1180khz Gisborne,it used to be 2XM,so after 1960 again.Has 1XA on it Radio Hauraki on 1480 so it started in 1966 on the tiri so probably 1966-67.Guess its sold now....
