what is the recommendation for a 2005 R1200GS. 90% of the riding for this particular bike is with pillion and luggage. Combined weight of the two humans is roughly 290 pounds. The standard height is a bit tall and i would really like it to be a bit lower. What does the installion usually run? Why chose this over Wilburs? Sorry about the basic questions but i am not mechanically gifted.
Ohlins has a number of shocks for the R1200GS. In a short shock, which will be about the same or a little lower than your stocker Ohlins Offers the BM508 and BM509. I am not sure what the installation will run, as it will depend on what accessaries you have on the bike and what the shop hourly rate is. Please check with whoever you plan to use to install them on that. I believe Ohlins does these things better than any Motorcycle shock manufacture: Support Engineering Resell Value Ride Quality Bike control Feel Build Quality Ohlins has a number of advantages over all the other aftermarket shocks. The first is support, Ohlins USA is the Distributor of Ohlins shocks in the USA and are owned by Ohlins Sweden. This requires them to keep a large support staff and a very large inventory of spare parts. So as the years go by there will always be parts and people who can service Ohlins shocks. Ohlins has a number of shops like ours that can also do service and in our case warranty repairs if needed. I work on maybe 1 or 2 Warranty problems a year. I sell more than 2000 Ohlins products a year. The Warranty is 5 years on DEFECTS of parts or labor. This does not cover normal maintenance. Ohlins is the largest producer of Aftermarket Motorcycle shocks. Ohlins shocks are used all over the world at every level, including racing at the highest level. This gives the 80 Ohlins Engineers first hand experiance in designing a reliable shock. It means shocks are not just designed on a shock dyno, they are installed on bikes and tested by Ohlins Riders that include former racers. Ohlins has an internet site called the Ohlins World Site, it lists all Ohlins Products made over the last 30 plus years. I can look at spec sheets, Installation manuals, spare parts lists drawings, for everything Ohlins has ever made, this is a huge assist when Customers have Questions.

The second new product for the R1200GS and R1200GS Adv are the TTX design shocks the BM676/ BM677 for the R1200GS and the BM678/BM679 for the R1200GS Adv http://www.bmws1000rr.net/pics/dualsportbmw.pdf I would like to explain a little about TTX type shocks. Ohlins introduced these to us in 2007. The are a completely different design them all prior Ohlins shock. They use a solid piston to move oil to two remote valves with shim stacks. One is the Rebound circuit and the other is the Compression circuit. By using a solid piston to two separate valve it solves a number of problems conventional shocks have First the two circuits, rebound and compression are completely separate, so when one is adjusted the other is NOT affected. Second the design reduces the possibility of cavitation, this allows Ohlins to reduce the Gas Pressure inside the shock from as high as 20 bar (294 PSI) to 6 Bar (88PSI) . What this means is lower pressure inside the shock. Lower pressure trying to push out shock oil, this makes the job of the seals easier, Lower friction, and most important a more reliable shock.

I heard that Ohlins is going to raise their prices next year, so this is the time to buy if you were thinking about it.
I would like to add Ohlins USA does already make a 30 MM cartridge kit for the F800GS forks as well as the Triumph 800 and Triumph 800XC. And are working others. Ohlins Sweden has announced they will also be making front fork kits for these same bikes as well as others. But the Ohlins Sweden kits are not due untill spring or summer 2013. We have installed the Ohlins USA kits in a number of F800GS's and the performance imnprovement is excellent.
I have some special pricing on the Ohlins BM606 and BM607 shocks. These are for the R1200GS Adv ONLY Both are being replaced by the newer TTX design shocks. The BM606 and BM607 were the best Ohins had for the R1200GSAdv from 2006 thru 2012. The rear is a progressive damping fully adjustable shock. Adjustable rebound, adjustable compression. With a piggyback Gas reservoir and a Hydraulic spring preload adjuster. The front is a standard Ohlins front with adjustable rebound. These can be used for both road use and offroad use.
