So if one was to leave The Great State of Texas, what would you put on your bucket list to see? I think I have a great deal crossed off I am just looking for additional input.
The country side around Brenham in the spring. The beach at High Island in the winter. US 90 on either side of Sanderson. The HEB right on the border in Del Rio. Boca Chica. Big Thicket. James River crossing. The old houses in Gonzales. The old houses in Jefferson. Fort Worth Stock Yards when there is NOT a festival going. The Kimbell and Amon G Carter museums. Sabal Palms. That straight stretch of road between Dalhart and Texline. Harvard Oaks at Monahans Sandhills. A copy of the Quanah Tribune. Buy a coke in Doss. Frio Bat Cave near Concan. F1 in Austin.
Bucket list of what to ride before you leave or what to ride outside the state? You've gotten responses on both and was just wondering what you meant.
I have been here for about 30 and have a fair amount crossed off (not all moto). I have a bad habit of going into restaurants and asking for the waiters final meal, kind of odd I know, kind of intimate that this person shares what could be their last meal with you. So that has been part of my inspiration...
Meridian has posted a great list... I've made a good many of them. I plan on touring Big Bend soon... Glacier National Park's Going to the Sun (with no traffic) is at the top of my out-of-state list. NFE
Returned from Big Bend yesterday... rode to Santa Elena Canyon then exited the park to the west and rode the River Road to Presidio. A surprisingly beautiful ride was from Presidio north to Marfa on Hwy 67. With the winter sun setting behind me, the valleys were bathed in twilight on a cloudless evening. NFE
was there in 1999 and the rangers told me the Yucca forest was in the best bloom in the last 50 years. Was beautiful. Bad pic to begin with, then scanned, so really does not do it justice.
Big Bend was on my 'Bucket List' until I visited there just before Thanksgiving. I spent 4 days there camping and soaking up the scenery. As I told those I met there, "rode 1200 miles to get here and found it to be worth every mile." It's not been removed it from my list but instead it's moved back to the top of my list for January and may be my jumping off point to ride as many national parks as I can in 2013. Trying to wear out my old GS, -Rick
I'm going to have to following this thread. I have family that lives down in Mission, that I usually ride out to visit once a year. This coming Feb., myself and another inmate or two from North GA are planning on riding out to Terlingua/Big Bend to have a couple beers on a porch somewhere. My wife's BIL may ride over to meet us, and hopefully my sister in law will be comfortable enough on her new bike to make the trip with him. We also have a good friend who use to live here in North GA, but now resides in CO, who is planning on meeting us as well. Our riding will strictly be pavement, but I'm sure we can keep ourself occupied for a couple of days.
The porch out front of The Starlite Theatre is the place to hang out and drink a cold Shiner. You will meet some local characters, trust me. Great place. Great area too.
One of the guys who is supposed to meet us, asked me what was in Terlingua? I told him cold beer and a porch. He said it sounded good to him. After 1400 miles for me and one other, it will be a welcome sight for sure. By the way. Any of you guys have any recommendations for lodging in the Terlingua area?
I've always stayed here. http://www.cmcm.cc/ Cheap. Clean. Very basic. Decently located. El Dorado has a bar and is closer to the starlight. http://bigbendchamber.homestead.com/Lodging.html
