Anecdotal info suggests they are not as robust as the Garmin units, more warranty claims and such, also LCD screen which is not as good in daylight as TFT. BurnieM should be able to be more specific, and this should be moved to the GPS forum.
I have one and I’m not a huge fan of it. The original firmware wasn't the easiest to use, the recent firmware upgrade makes it better, but still not 100% happy with it. Little things like not being able to simply jump to the next waypoint when following a route and not many online resources supporting the Magellan units or being easily compatible with the Vantage Point PC software. I play around Geocaching and they only support Garmin, there were a few other sites that I have visited that don’t support the Magellan format either. Magellan guarded their operating system too well, so no one else bothered making anything compatible with them. The unit works well, just not as well as I had hoped. It was useless with the supplied map too. I got a copy of OliverK shonky maps from GPSOZ that work well, They are derived from the Auslig 1:50 000maps and had all the tracks marked that I rode on out west. Here is my mount, GPS held on with velcro and it doesn't go anywhere. For power I use the USB lead that comes with the unit and plug it into a 12V-USB adaptor I stole from my daughter's DS.
Have you had a look at the forum, there seems to be a forum for everything these days, it addressed a few of my problems; http://www.tritonforum.com/forum/ I loaded the latest version of VantagePoint (VP) the other week and had real issues. VP would continually die whenever I tried to modify any files, and that was if I could get it to run at all. The fix is to run the update file which will uninstall most of the files. Then you have to manually remove all VP or Magellan files you can find on the computer. I had to do it twice as each time I found more. Once that was done, reinstall VP and it should run OK, I then transfered my custom maps back across from the GPS.
