A lot of people move from the stock 17 tooth to the 16 tooth.

I picked up mine last week, and was just waiting for the 600 mile breakin to be done before putting it on.

Makes first gear a little more manageable off road, and only costs about 250 rpm in 6th on the freeway. No need to redo your chain with the 16 tooth either, and it costs only about $20.

Went to a 16 from a 17 on my 990. It's not to buzzy on the road unless your riding at 100. Offroad it's awsome once you get used to it.

As stated, the stock rear is 42. KTMTWINS sells a 45 which is essentially the equivalent to a 16 front. I went with the 45 rear. Adds about 400+ RPM's to cruise which is quite acceptable as the original gearing is too high anyway (even for highway use).

So the stock Sprockets are 17/42 ? I looked on H.O.W and couldnt find the info..

From model year 2008 EU / 2009 USA, KTM is using 16T front sprockets on the 990ADV's..

I have an 07 and the stock is 17/42...after 35,000miles I finally switched to a 16 in the front and kept the 42 rear. Wish I had done it on day one. Now I know why KTM finally made the switch.

I'm now running a 16/45 on my '05 950 Adv. S, I really like it for regular local highway and offroad riding. Just got back from a 2500 mile trip, forgot to bring my 17 front for the interstate riding, but it wasn't too bad.

I recently switched from the 17/42 to 16/45 :clap The rock set up is WAY to tall, even for highway use, I found myself having to shift down to pass someone at 75 otherwise the bike would lug a bit even at that speed.

The 16/45 feels like it should have been the stock ratio all along. Bike pulls hard and smooth everywhere. Turns about 5k rpm at 75mph which is fine on a bike with a 9.5k redline.

I did the 16 front soon after I got my 06. It was a great improvement. Then 45 and new chain. Just a little short for 80 mph. Superb everywhere else.

With my bike I found it was winding out in the gears so fast I felt it was not able to use the torque it produced with a 17/45 set up. So it went back to 17/42 and for road riding it was much more fun. Slightly harder to pull a wheelie but still great in the twistiys and just normal street use. I do like the slightly less engine braking effect also.

Ive got the 16/45 on the bike now (bought it that way) but he gave me the 17/42 sprockets as well... anybody know if the chain will fit? I guess I will find out this weekend, because im changing back to stock... I want the better road gears...
