have you been following the hype about the schnitz racing 685 kit and stage 2 head ,i am going to build a spare engine for my bike with this and a recluse clutch kit ,then have it waiting for when mine gives it up ,maybe when i am in africa some where it should be about ready ,mine has heaps of goodies ,the best being the F1 engineering rear shock,i bought a whole 2004 kx 250 f front end i am putting in next year when i head back to colombia where my bike is at the moment, so that should sort out the front end ,hey locky those panniers are from KLR650.com in Rosario in Washington state ,i went to their shop and picked up some seconds for $200 and a set of touring pegs ,i built my own racks in guatemala as the happy trails ones were rubbish and fell to bits

It's great to see some high K KLR's here :clap

and +1 on the KLR Rally report and pics :deal

griffo1962 06-22-2008 02:16 PM

trip report is being put together atm.

the 685 kit is a no goer on pre '96 engines, Cary put me onto Wossner Pistons, they come in upto 2mm o/s. I've got a 1mm o/s kit coming today. Will install it in the next couple of weeks. I changed my clutch plates and springs before we went to Alice and the plates were in perfect condition. The new ones were not any thicker than the 150,000km old ones, the springs however were sagged to below the limit. this would explain the occassional slipping on hard take offs.

I like the idea of the Rekluse clutch, good idea to have a spare engine too.:D

The Fournales rear shock on mine is absolutely great, it took about 20-30,000kms to break in and become really smooth. It handles the big loads really well. My pump has just given up the ghost so I will have to fix it this week so I can drop the pressure from the trip.:cry

thecanoeguy 06-22-2008 05:33 PM

oh well

i rememeber reading that ,you would have to put the later barrell on ,150,000 km sounds pretty good though ,a freshen up will do the world of good ,hard to go past the KLR i reckon ,hope mine makes the lap i am doing
