Algonquin E G G Ride Report

Figured I'd share a few pics I took w/ my new camera on my TOR run up to Algonquin Park last week. The Original Idea was to stash the EGG in Killbear Park.... but the folks I was camping with in Killbear (Irish Simon and Smokin' Billy) convinced me the EGG would prefer Irish corpses.:huh

Here's the pre-ride check, captured by Mom:

Yes I did notice and finally fix the blinker.

A wee bit later I spotted what I thought might be a good TAG for later:

Then I rethought things:

As an Inmate in the Asylum,I was excited to find what promised to be a good spot for lunch......The Mental Pub:

After 140 kms of Highways, Cities and Nuclear Plants, I'd escaped:

Algonquin E G G RIDE REPORT

Soon thereafter I was hopelessly lost on beautiful backroads, usually a happy state of affairs. However, I had a mission! So I stopped to ask a local.... and met the lovely and talented Emily G., who set me straight:

On through the crowded twisties:

Past the scenic Swamps of Ontario:

Decided not to:

Searched high and low.... Found the lake, but not the namesake:

Left Swamp Country and headed into the Onterrible Mountains:

Night fell:

So I needed to make a beeline for Algonquin.
Happily, Dog provided:

After several hours of rain mixed w/ high speed running, I was close. I got some final advice from Pat and Mike, a couple of bikers who were too wasted to find their way back to "The Road House" and probably slept in the parking lot:
http://i599.photobucket.com/albums/t...t/P1000658.jpg

I took their sage advice to camp "wherever the fuck you like":

Luckily, the Man is spread thin up there:

I was sorry not to run into Maria, Clara, or their good friend.

I'm pretty sure you could see my bonfire from the Quebec side of the Ottawa River:

After a very manly hissy fit I had a closer look:

All I'm gonna say is Bruce must be an Idiot!!
Two minutes after packing my camera away and resuming my ride I was buzzed by a CAF Hercules. Amazing sight; wished I'd had the camera ready!
I am now thinking about a HelmetCam...
So onwards I went, quickly passing through Downtown Brent:

.

On my way to the Meteor Crater:

.
Which, after 450 million years, is beloved of Geologists but a bit of a letdown for the rest of us.
.
.
.
.
On the lookout tower I met Leah and Scotty, who belong to an obscure UFO cult from Quebec and insisted on paying obeisance to the EGG. As I favour religious freeoms, and am not one to get in the way of alien beings:

They wanted to take the EGG to their landing site (???) but relented when I showed them the Rules.:deal

I had no idea Brent was such a big, cosmopolitan city

When I went to Brent there was some construction going on but wow they got a lot done in those two weeks time...

This is what it looked like when I went there..

Dan Alexander 09-02-2009 12:23 PM

my how times change :D

the question is .... now don't tell me ..... what city is that??

Spain maybe? Italy?

Perhaps I better CMY in case there are any Geologists lurking on ADVRider:http://i599.photobucket.com/albums/t...t/P1000726.jpg
.
.
.
.
So that's 250 megatons.:huh Is that Metric? It seems that Canadian Geologists favour the more accurate (not to mention iconoclastic and easier to use) Imperial Measurement System over the silly Metric Confusion Measurements

So I now needed to join my pals in Killbear Park. First I had to conquer the Great Stonecliffe Pass:
http://i599.photobucket.com/albums/t...t/P1000738.jpg
.
.
.
.
Almost ran this Legendary Fellow over:

After 12hrs riding I joined my pals in Killbear.
Irish Simon, Evil Genius:

And Smokin' Billy:

Could not wait for me and my corkscrew:

.

After much festivity, we all had a game of Hokey Pokey, which, as you can see, the EGG won, hands down, as Irish Simon was well past Left and Right:

The next day was spent recuperating at the beach. The EGG is a real bitch hungover.:D

Later we all split up to flee Killbear and head to Toronto. Irish Simon and Smokin' Billy took the Highway and were home in 2 hrs.
I did not, and it took 7hrs.
Now that's a shortcut!!:
http://i599.photobucket.com/albums/t...P1000802-1.jpg
.
.
.
.
This road was the lonliest, curviest, sexiest beast of a backroad on the whole trip. The only traffic I encountered in 30kms was captured in this pic... of course.

Now if I could just remeber how the hell to get back to it.....:norton

I zoom in but can't read the language on the signs and can't tell what side the driver is sitting on ..... the are quoting the year Elizabeth something on the church in Latin so maybe England??

Pickles

Hey Dan

Thought you were kidding. Look at the building just peeking over the central building--its nickname is another word for pickle.
If you give up I'll tell ya: I've learned my lesson about being too cryptic.:rofl

Dan Alexander 09-02-2009 01:39 PM

I saw that building but haven't a clue what another name for a pickle and a building have in common ... ya gotta tell me now

Sorry for the delay Dan.
I was stuck on page 63, unaware you were on page 64.:norton

Its London, and the building I was refering to is known as the Gherkin (an old word for pickle) for obvious reasons...

http://i599.photobucket.com/albums/t...ot/gherkin.jpg

Dan Alexander 09-02-2009 06:16 PM

OK, thanks. My third guess was better because of the year on the church. I knew a gerkin is a small pickle but had no idea there was a building called The Gerkin. It's quite a building.
