That's a 2010 Ultra Limited with stock pipes (not Rineharts). He's got Florida plates, so he's probably not familiar with elevation changes and corners like what's there. Chances are he target fixated on the photographer, then over corrected midway through the corner and started dragging hard parts. Kudos to him for staying with the corner rather than jumping on the binders, standing the bike up, and crossing the centerline into oncoming traffic.

I think many of us outside of Florida (or Kansas) take things like hills and corners for granted. The Dragon was nothing special to me, as I'm surrounded by roads like (or better than) it. For a rider that isn't used to that sort of riding, it can be challenging. No matter what kind of bike they're riding.

I wonder how many of the crashes on the dragon are a result of "corner fatigue". There's nothing about it that looks particularly tricky, but maybe riders just lose focus after so many corners.

The Dragon attracts idiots, and breeds a climate of anticipation and urgency, even in the cruiser crowd. Many people start riding, rind a nice pace, and too late realize they are riding at 1-2% points of enthusiam above their skill level, and down they go. Or they are outright over-cooking, and again the riding is above the skill level.

Either way, I've ridden it, it's a road. My guess is if there were 20 other roads with 300+ turns in 11 ish miles, we'd be seeing crash pics of that location too. Any track day I've attended, the beginner group generally has 1-2 crashes PER SESSION, the first 2-3 sessions of the day. The Dragon IS the beginner session on public roads.

IMHO...

YMMV,
Barry

Skyclad 09-22-2011 06:55 AM

It is not just a road...it is a road with one hell of a good advertising program. Great for that area for the tourist money it brings in.

The same thing would happen on roads like VA Rt 16, if folks promoted it as much as the Dragon. Personally, I am glad they don't. I prefer my twisties without all the squids and pirates.

ricochetrider 09-22-2011 08:45 AM

it does occur to me that out of the thousands of people who ride the dragon every year, in this thread we see only a few who have crashed... and that thanks to the fact that there's some sucker with a camera on every third turn down there trying to sell you your slice of Dragon Tail Pie...

this doesn't mean i'm not as critical as everyone else about them... :evil

There's a third kind: those who may or may not have crashed, and may or may not crash in the future, but enjoy making fun of those who crashed and got caught on film doing it, which may or may not be the first time they crashed and may or may not be the first time they were caught on film, either crashing or not crashing.

This kind may or may not be a subset of the other two kinds.

I'm thinking from the front fender and the missing light, that the front end has some damage that might make it unsafe to ride. I bet it's a total loss with the cost of repair's at a HD shop and the front and entire side damaged. You could probaly pick it up on Copart or Crankyape for half what that dummie paid for it!:eek1

I bought the bike in 85, had it painted in 87, and sold it after about 10 years. Kent Holt, in Athens, OH did the paint work. It was the unfaired model. I haven't seen it since.

:lol3 Now we have to account not only for the "Killboy" effect - causing actions worthy of posting here because of the cameras by the road - Now we have the "Killboy failure Dragon Fest" effect. How long before someone crashes in front of Killboy, trying to get into this thread?

So Joan Claybrooks 70's backwards bike still exists???

For you young-uns, Ms Claybrook was head of the NHTSA, and tried to develop a rear steering MC, because she felt countersteering was the cause of a lot of MC accidents. Millions were spent, until they realized physics is based on laws, and when you turned the rear wheel, the bike would fall over to the outside of the turn.
