That rider has more gear on than 95% of the riders who attend Rolling Thunder, that's for sure.

I admire the folks who ride it, it's a worthy cause, but even though I live right here, I've never had much of a motivation to ride it myself. Yeah, I'll walk down to the Pentagon and stroll among the bikes, drool over all the nice shiny stuff, but riding 5 mph in a rolling traffic jam through downtown DC in sweltering heat holds zero appeal to me. (I can do that during my commute! :wink:)

One thing that always strikes me during Rolling Thunder: NO ONE wears safety gear. I'm not just talking about the parade (even I, ATGATT, wouldn't bother with much going that slow in that heat). I'm talking during the ride here to Washington and touring around town. It's genuinely shocking.

Admittedly, in my experience I see plenty of gear-happy riders in DC: the BMW power rangers, the HD pirates, even some of the Gixxer Squids will gear up to a certain extent-- full face helmets, good jackets, gloves and boots, even riding pants.

The Rolling Thunder crowd from across the country? Novelty beanies, t-shirts, shorts and gym shoes (or sandals!). *Maybe* some fringe-y leather stuff or jeans if they're really safety conscious. 95%, and that's not hyperbole (heck, if anything, I'm *understating* it).

Anyway, just a vivid reminder for me of how alien a concept ATGATT is to many riders.

wouldn't it stand that since prolly ALL the wrecks on that road are speeders that have wrecked over the 35-30 limit, that riders should be educated? And not just fined?

Why make the road and all those that use it pay the price for something that's not even relevant...

lots of people go to the Dragon just because it's a bit of "rite of passage", just something you need to do to experience what all the talk is about. It's probably not much of a big deal for people who live on the west coast because it's just too far away - like Palomar Mtn is for me - it's not likely I will ever have the opportunity to ride it because it's just too far away, so I don't think about it and it isn't important to me.

I live about 5 hours from Deal's Gap, and I plan to be there this weekend. I have done it many times before, and I would stay away, but I am going with a friend and he has never done it, so we will see. There are other roads I would prefer to ride, just because of the traffic, cops, squids, and pirates.

And I will most likely add a sticker to my bike. :D

It was my great pleasure and honor yesterday to raise the Coast Guard Flag at our local Memorial Day observation. An under appreciated and incredibly vital part of our national and civil defense. My cap off to you, and thank you for your service!

My brother is retired Coast Guard and I made sure to show him this bike :D
