But that soultion would be too simple and when has the federal government ever adopted a simple solution?

I think government did, but people have no restraint, nor common sense :evil

You're wrong. See: Greenland. Or is it Iceland?

Kids can legally buy porn, alcohol and drugs. But since they CAN do it, they [can] get it out of their system and eventually it's not a big deal.

Like that Footloose Soundtrack tape. Cooler that shit the first 200 times you listen to it, but a big fat "meh!" and in the .25 cent bin today.

Here in the states where EVERYTHING is illegal, and you stand a great chance of getting NAILED the first time or every time you do something, it's a biological stimulation or "high" to do something that's a combination of illegal and you're told, "you can't do that".

So duh, that naturally makes one want to go out and "prove you wrong".

Now if you don't mind... Can you hold my beer? My CBR600rrrrrrr is a learner bike...

That rider has more gear on than 95% of the riders who attend Rolling Thunder, that's for sure.

I admire the folks who ride it, it's a worthy cause, but even though I live right here, I've never had much of a motivation to ride it myself. Yeah, I'll walk down to the Pentagon and stroll among the bikes, drool over all the nice shiny stuff, but riding 5 mph in a rolling traffic jam through downtown DC in sweltering heat holds zero appeal to me. (I can do that during my commute!)

One thing that always strikes me during Rolling Thunder: NO ONE wears safety gear. I'm not just talking about the parade (even I, ATGATT, wouldn't bother with much going that slow in that heat). I'm talking during the ride here to Washington and touring around town. It's genuinely shocking.

Admittedly, in my experience I see plenty of gear-happy riders in DC: the BMW power rangers, the HD pirates, even some of the Gixxer Squids will gear up to a certain extent-- full face helmets, good jackets, gloves and boots, even riding pants.

The Rolling Thunder crowd from across the country? Novelty beanies, t-shirts, shorts and gym shoes (or sandals!). *Maybe* some fringe-y leather stuff or jeans if they're really safety conscious. 95%, and that's not hyperbole (heck, if anything, I'm *understating* it).

Anyway, just a vivid reminder for me of how alien a concept ATGATT is to many riders.

You read it wrong. There were 20 deaths through April of last year, 28 through April of this year.

I'm afraid it's only a matter of time before this road gets straightened, closed, or neutered in some way.

It was "neutered"
Speed limit dropped to 30 mph
Those paved "pullovers" are really for the THP to park for RADAR traps

Back in the 70's the speed limit was 55mph

As for straightened, well it follows the boundary of the GSMNP

Closed? Nahh
It's the only option in that area

Buffalo are not an invasive species. Greed and uncontrolled hunting(no regulations from the government) spurred the massacre of the Buffalo.

Here I go again... :rolleyes

wouldn't it stand that since prolly ALL the wrecks on that road are speeders that have wrecked over the 35-30 limit, that riders should be educated? And not just fined?

Why make the road and all those that use it pay the price for something that's not even relevant...

Crashing at 35mph?

So at this rate, they'll still be crashes, more income generated for "speeding", more man-power will be needed to patrol the more speeders... and the limit will continue to drop?

WTF?

But graduated licensing is Communist? What is banning trucks from up there?

lots of people go to the Dragon just because it's a bit of "rite of passage", just something you need to do to experience what all the talk is about. It's probably not much of a big deal for people who live on the west coast because it's just too far away - like Palomar Mtn is for me - it's not likely I will ever have the opportunity to ride it because it's just too far away, so I don't think about it and it isn't important to me.

I live about 5 hours from Deal's Gap, and I plan to be there this weekend. I have done it many times before, and I would stay away, but I am going with a friend and he has never done it, so we will see. There are other roads I would prefer to ride, just because of the traffic, cops, squids, and pirates.

And I will most likely add a sticker to my bike. :D

It was my great pleasure and honor yesterday to raise the Coast Guard Flag at our local Memorial Day observation. An under appreciated and incredibly vital part of our national and civil defense. My cap off to you, and thank you for your service!

My brother is retired Coast Guard and I made sure to show him this bike :D

They made an extended "blog post" of sorts on their site for the build of this bike - click here to check it out

Who the hell cares?
I guess you do for some odd reason. :scratch

It's a cool road to ride and you can meet other riders from all over the States and for all over the world.

They come to share a common experience and they bring stories and bikes.
Now tell me...what's your problem with that? :ear
Yes, there are better roads, but that's not the point.

Do you have stickers of ANY kind on your bike?

How about a tee shirt from a M/C gathering or museum or race or a M/C show?

If you have even ONE of the above well then PKB.

Why are you so judgmental, dismissive and condescending towards the experiences of others?

I am with ya Shogs. I take my Beemers down to the HD Museum all the time for Two Wheeled Thursdays.
I even have a drink or two, and hang with the Pirates. A lot of fun.
:clap
I am always last to leave, but that is because I can't hear my damn R50 when I am kick starting it!
:lol3
