Apologies to the Africa Twin club Triveneto for deep linking into their website, but check out this movie trailer for their '03 rally in Tunisia.

WOW, nice movie! I noticed that the A.T. and the old school Tigers look rather alike. I am curious to know how they compare performancewise.

How big a deal is it to buy a new or used A/T in Europe and ship it to the USA and get it licensed? Is this bike available in Japan used? Where is it made?

gtcoop 08-24-2004 09:03 PM

wow ,this is wierd...i was just in paying my insurance bill for my new v-strom and i seen one of these bikes in the parking lot of the ama..never seen one before.i looked at his licence plates and couldn't figure out where he was from.(not north america).then i looked around trying to find him and there was nobody with riding equipment on in there.to bad ,cause i wanted to talk to him or her...oh yah this was in lethbridge,alberta.canada...it's to bad more companies don't make more of these bikes so we have more options on what to buy.

Honda stopped making the Africa Twin in the '03 model year, so getting hold of a new one is gettting harder and harder. However there are plenty of second hand bikes, especially in France, Germany, etc.

Any Americans done the private import thing and like to comment on the hassles/pitfalls?

The vast majority of bikes in Japan are 400cc and below, due to their 2-stage licencing laws. Apparantly it's expensive and a pain to get the unrestricted licence so most folk bomb around on little bikes. So I doubt there's many Africa Twins on the streets of Tokyo.
