any it465 owners out here?
I'm just curious what I'm getting into. Friend of mine had 1 I'm getting for a $100. Ir runs and is 90% complete. It does foul plugs and needs the compression release lever fixed but for the money what the heck. How are parts and stuff to get? Also how do they ride? I've only heard they are a handful. Thanks

Be thanklful it's not the IT490. The 465 was sweet where the 490 was a beast. The only thing you'll face is soft suspension. Very good for a play bike, but too soft for competition levels. The engine has one of those sweet power band: great torque and good top end power.
Parts Bandit still lists the parts fiche so would expect Yamaha still has the important parts available. |
Hi.
I bought one 1981 IT 465 yesterday. It was quite hard to start it, so i wonder if anyone have a "How-to start an old big two-stroker" guide? Should I twist the throttle a few times before I kick, and how can I determine that the piston is in right position etc etc. How many % of oil do you mix in the fuel? |
Some tricks I used to use when starting big bore finicky 2 strokes:
1) Try tipping the bike over on its side, until fuel dribbles out the carb over flow. or 2) Stick the bike in gear and rock it back and forth a couple of times. This will get a fuel/air charge into the cylinder. For either method, make sure you ratchet the kick start lever all the way up before you kick it. You can often "feel your way" to catch one more tooth on the ratchet system. This can help immensly. |
Thanks! It is basicly the same in this video:

Shocker!
1. I use 20:1 Mixed 110 octaine fuel & caster Klottz oil. 2. I turn on fuel & twist throttle once. 3. turn choke on. 4. stand on metal milk crate then find top dead center & kick starter on top of stroke. 5. jump on the pot licker like it owes me money. 6.Ride untill tank is empty to have most possible fun with out having to re-start.= I LOVE MY 465!
