Elite 150 blown motor
I picked up a 1986 Elite 150 Deluxe last summer to replace my old chinese moped. It ran well in general and only had a couple of small problems, like a bad starter switch and a speedometer problem, which I expected from such an old bike. It had around 10,000 miles on it when I bought it and I put around 5,000 on it so far. I have taken very good care of it. I changed the oil every 900-1000 miles, changed the gaskets and other parts. Then I took it out for a ride on a nice sunny day on the back roads, and all of the sudden when I was cruising at about 45 mph the engine just died, as if the spark plug was cut. It would not even try and start, so I thought there was no spark. I walked it to my garage and tested the spark. It had perfect spark. Next I checked out the carburetor. It was fine and had gas, and the mixture seemed good.

So then I checked out a few other basic things and decided to get deep into the engine. Then I tested compression, which was extremely low at only around 30 PSI! It should be around 184 PSI. Usually compression problems have to do with valves, so I checked out the timing and it was fine. I took off the cover, and the valves were fine and not stuck. The rocker arms were also fine. The chain was good and so was the cam shaft. So then I was thinking it had to be either a worn cylinder, bad piston rings or a worn piston, or a bad cylinder gasket. So I took the whole engine apart and found that the all of these things were fine. The piston rings were good, the cylinder was perfect, the piston was good but could use some cleaning. I have experience with a lot of different engines and motorcycles, but I am still not sure about this engine.

Does any one have any ideas? In the mean time, I bought a lightly used 1987 elite 150 engine off of ebay to through in it. Ill post some pics of the engine soon.

Put the motor on TDC and pump shop air into via compression tester adapter. Listen for where the air is escaping. That is your leak. Goos luck.

I've swapped an Elite 125 drivetrain into an Elite 150 body. Your swap should be even easier. Get a couple of friends over and have fun with the job.

I have the same bike; mine had 12,600 when I bought it, and after riding it since April, it now has nearly 16,000 on it.

One often overlooked problem with these engines is the intake/carburetor mount; these develop cracks that may or may not cause the engine to run poorly, but in all cases, will lean out the mixture enough to eventually burn the intake (and/or exhaust) valve. A burned valve face will be severely discolored, and will be chipped around the edges, causing the compression loss and eventual engine failure. IF enough of the valve face chips off, it can cause scoring in the cylinder wall, or crack the piston.

If you're lucky, the above has not happened (mine made it to 12,600 with a cracked intake), and you simply have a blown head gasket.

Engine removal and installation can take (no joke) 30 minutes if you know what you're doing. I installed my engine by myself in my living room in the middle of January!

Thanks for the help so far. Another thing I forgot to mention is that it seemed like the performance was going down towards the end. It probably did have something to do with the carburetor intake mount. The fuel economy and top speed were less towards the end. The fuel economy went from around 70-80 mpg to in the low 60s and upper 50s. The top speed went from an indicated 60-65 mph to around 50-55 mph. The acceleration was a little less to, but worse in the upper range. It could have been the transmission, but it has a new belt and the roller weights and springs all appear to be in great condition.

As far as swapping out the engine, it should be pretty easy, but I have just removed the old engine yesterday. It was an extremely difficult job, because almost every bolt was tightened by a 500 pound power lifter, striped, or had been rounded due to over tightening. The motor mount bolt was EXTREMELY tight. I have been lifting weights for years, and with all of my strength and weight, it would not even budge slightly. I had to drill out the inner part of the bolt, and crank the wrench with every bit of strength I have. The bolt was not only way over tightened, but had red lock tight on it!

So anyways, I am waiting for the new motor from ebay, a 1987 elite 150 engine. I should be able to bolt it up pretty quickly. It has low miles on it, only around 2995. I will watch the manifold on this one, probably replace it due to its age.

you know you can shoe string in the elite 250 in there to. you ll find that people have done it if you google it.

Yea I was thinking about that, but I could not find any 250 engines for sale. I just wanted to get this running to ride around for a little while and then buy a bigger scooter like a Burgman 650 or silver wing. But I would like to try and put a 250 engine in it some time for more speed and power, maybe if I can find a good deal on one and I can get some time. I heard those 250s can cruise comfortably at their top speed too. My 150 would only do about 63-65 mph on GPS, but I could only cruise comfotably at around 50 or maybe 55 mph. 70 mph cruise speed would be a big improvement over that though!
