1970s Sears Free Spirit 8088 Moped NEED PARTS
 
I am trying to fix a 1970s Sears Free Spirit 8088 Moped and it is running and whatnot, but its bogging down on full throttle and not wanting to go good without the choke on, I am thinking about replacing the jets, but I dont knwo where to get them from. Any ideas? Would there be any other names this scooter would be sold under?

Probably just a clogged main jet. Clean out the carb. No need to replace the jets.

Well I have cleaned out everything on it. Anything that contained gas now contains dust, but I have since cleaned everything out and replaced the fuel line and filter.

I kinda figured that was the only thing that may be an issue, maybe corrorision on the jet (which it has some) has caused it to allow less gas through.

Needing the choke indicates a lean mixture. If the main jet is clean I'd suspect an air leak, possibly leaking main seals. Jets don't go bad and don't need to be replaced unless changes such as porting, exhaust, etc., are made to the engine.

By main seals on this you mean the head? intake?

The main seals are the ones that seal the crankshaft main bearings. Rubber seals eventually harden and allow air to be sucked into the crankcase leaning the mixture.

Can I test something to see if these are bad without removing the engine?

Yes, if you have the right tools. It involves plugging the intake and exhaust then pulling a vacuum to see if it holds. Sometimes it's just easier to replace the seals.

How much and do you need special tools to press the crank?

One quick way to audibly check that your crankcase seals are working is to pull the spark plug out, open the throttle to full with the gas shut off at the tap, and have some one slowly crank the engine over while you listen at the spark plug hole.

The seals should be OK if, when it's turned over, at about 20~50 rpm, you hear a light, sharp, forceful "schplop!" sound from the transfer ports with each rotation of the crank. It should also blow a puff of air, or a light bit of fuel air mixture out of the sparkplug hole with each rotation.

It will vary with different engines, but there should be a slight bit of resistance just before the transfer ports are uncovered by the piston and the noise happens.

You can also test for leaks using brake cleaner or starter fluid while the motor is running, and spraying it at various suspect areas. Head, base of cylinder, case halves, intake, exhaust...

More then likely it''s a puch moped under the sears name. sear at one time sold everything from house kits to motorcycles. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puch#Puch_mopeds
