Alvin "Spike" Rhiando attempts Sahara crossing in the '50s
Racing driver and designer "Spike" Rhiando seen with his cabin scooter. With this machine he was to attempt a North-to-South crossing of Africa in his London to Cape Town epic journey.

Somewhere in the Sahara, he was found in a very poor state, resting in the shade of a large rock, by a patrol of the French Foreign Legion.
Long before the infamous stainless steel bodied DeLorean DMC-12 (as seen in Back to the Future) was built in Ireland in 1981; Rhiando was engaged by US entrepreneur Bill Curtis (in the late '50s) to design a glass fibre bodied car. The Shamrock was to be built in Ireland, for sale in both America and Britain, but just eight were built.
