'70 sl350 street tracker
Hello all! My name is Shane and I'm new to bike riding and building. About 2 years ago, I bought my wife a Honda Spree for our anniversary, and enjoyed riding it around so much, that I ended up with another, then another. Eventually, I ended up with four of them. I know I look like a douche riding around on it, but I had fun, and it sparked my interest in building something bigger.
So I started looking around for something a bit bigger, but not too big. Just something I could bomb around town on. I decided on a cb350, and quickly found 2 titled parts bikes in my area for next to nothing. http://i.imgur.com/7LGDY.jpg Then I found a great deal on a running and riding sl350 locally that I also scooped up. It was in rough shape, but I didn't mind, it gave me a good starting point. http://i.imgur.com/daxDo.jpg http://i.imgur.com/UOFnn.jpg A few days later, I had something like this. http://i.imgur.com/TA0Ef.jpg http://i.imgur.com/tn9g1.jpg Next up was fitting an rd400 tank, cl360 fork (about 2" shorter than the sl350 units), welding on a longer hoop for the longer seatpan, and lengthening the swingarm 4". The swingarm really changed up the look, as well as the rd400 tank. I like the kind of layed out stance it has with the rear wheel kicked back. http://i.imgur.com/EjCKz.jpg http://i.imgur.com/D6a5b.jpg http://i.imgur.com/Vca9g.jpg http://i.imgur.com/sVQMQ.jpg http://i.imgur.com/l5z6v.jpg http://i.imgur.com/obElq.jpg http://i.imgur.com/k1yQC.jpg I got everything pretty much tacked up on the frame how I wanted it, so it was time to tear it down to finish my welds, paint and clean the engine up a little. http://i.imgur.com/NHvef.jpg http://i.imgur.com/bJ5lz.jpg http://i.imgur.com/lcTdl.jpg So that's where I'm at right now. Plans are to paint the frame black, engine will be raw/dull aluminum with black sidecovers. Trying to keep the polished metal to a minimum, but the forks and upper triple will be a dull, slightly polished finish. I'm hoping to have it assembled by next weekend, but I'm waiting on my fork seals, fork bearings and allen bolts fot my engine covers. Updates will follow! Oh yeah, and here's my moped, lol http://i.imgur.com/IDcXd.jpg |
allen bolts
Who did you order the allen bolts from? The guy I used to buy from is out of business.
|
I bought them from fastenal, but they had to order a few. Tore my forks down today, and started polishing and trimming them. I got one lower polished, going to finish the other tomorrow and then reassemble them. Turned out good, not exactly a mirror finish, but that's not necessarily what I was going for either. Pics tomorrow!

So I got alot of painting done today. I fucked up a fork seal so I had to order another pair, the other one is in though. I don't want to talk about it. Sorry I don't have any pics of the painted pieces, I'll take some next time I work on the bike (probably sunday). The VHT krinkle paint works really really well, the parts look awesome. Just painted a few tidbits today, sunday I'll paint the rest up. Still have to paint sidecovers, skidplate, and the kickstart arm, oh yeah, and the frame. The kid who was going to sandblast my frame for me seems to have changed his mind, so I'm prolly going to have to pony up and take it to a shop.
Anyway, here's some pics of the fork lowers. http://distilleryimage1.s3.amazonaws...38048d2c_7.jpg http://distilleryimage11.s3.amazonaw...381b651f_7.jpg http://distilleryimage0.s3.amazonaws...0a1cdc2c_7.jpg Didn't want a mirror finish, I was pleasantly surprised when I cleaned the compound off that they were pretty much exactly how I wanted them! More pics to come. |
exhaust bolt stud
I noticed one of the exhaust bolt studs is missing, I also have one missing from a similar project, do you know where to get a replacement?http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/...1/cf044e96.jpg

A good auto parts store should have, or be able to get a metric stud for the exhaust. Is the hole OK but just missing the stud, or is the hole buggered up?
BTW....the polished fork leg looks good! Lynn |
I ended up helping my brother paint his house on sunday, so I'm a bit behind, but here's and update.
Finished up all the welding on my frame, unfortunately. I am not a good welder, I wouldn't even say I'm a decent welder, so don't laugh!! I should have it atleast primered by tomorrow night, but hopefully I'll get as far as throwing a coat of paint on there. Here's some pics, more soon. My wife took some pics while I was welding/grinding. http://i.imgur.com/kZj6L.jpg http://i.imgur.com/ySH4e.jpg I really really like this paint. Tough as nails! The pictures really don't do it justice, this shit is great!! http://i.imgur.com/MCW7v.jpg http://i.imgur.com/pP6tv.jpg?1 |
The frame looks awesome! I'll take some pics on Sunday after it treats a little more. It'll need to sit for atleast a week to get a tight wrinkle finish like my triple tree, but it's going to look great when it's done! If its treated, I should have a roller together by Wednesday, Sunday at the latest if it's still gummy on Wednesday. I'm stoked to see what it looks like!

Looking very nice. I'm jealous. That was my plans for my bike when I first got it.

Got some work done today. Put the front end all together with my new conical bearings, much nicer and less headache than the ball bearings! Also threw the swinger on and painted up the rest of the parts, including the engine sidecovers. Should be putting the rest of it together soon, I just need to wait for the paint to cure now, again, lol. Frame isn't quite cured yet, but I managed to put it together without fucking it up too bad :D. More pics when more is done!

Wrinkles get tighter and tighter over about a 2 week period. Looooooong wait. http://distilleryimage10.s3.amazonaw...0a1e86af_7.jpg |
I have a frame that I had powdercoated a couple of months ago with silver hamertone that looks a lot like that pic of your triple tree. I really like the look and cant wait to see how you finish the rest of your build. What are you thinking for the tank? I'm toying with the idea of wraping mine with a layer of carbon fiber.
|
It's going to be kind of a ratty bike when it's done, the tank is going to stay the same, but I'm going to put honda decals over the Yamaha decals, lol. I like the 70s graphics.
