Honda XR650L...help....
 
XR650L....2008 was running fine.
On the way hone from a weekend of trails, stopped for petrol....all OK.
at some point on the way home, my front light (low & high beam) and my starter button no longer work.
If I short out the terminals on the starter solenoid, the bike starts and runs fine (still no front light)
The battery has a full charge, there on no blown fuses. When running, the battery appears to be getting the correct charge. Rear lights, brake lights, indicators & horn all working ok.
The only thing not working, is the start button and front light.
I've had a quick check of all the snap connectors & wiring in general, now I'm stuck....

Are they linked somewhere?? What could it be??

Any ideas??

It's the starter switch assembly. Try wiggling the start button and see if the light comes back on. My bike did this and I shot some contact cleaner in the switch (after removing it from the handle bars) and the headlight works again. If this doesn't fix your problem I'd bet you need a new switch assembly. Does the bike live out doors?

WOW 10 minutes and a reply. Thanks...that will be my first job tomorrow. If it fixes it, you'll be top of the Christmas card list.

I'm with mcma111, it's probably the switch assembly. There are several interlocks on the XRL that will keep the starter button from working but the fact that the headlight is out also, in my opinion, points to the switch assy.

WOOHOO!! Fixed it. Not a blown fuse, but a broken one. Couldn't physically see it, it only showed up after putting it across a voltmeter.

The fix was a new fuse. Tiny hairpin fracture not visible with the naked eye.

A little pocket sized 12 volt test probe would be handy to keep in a tool kit on the bike. Most of the time you don't need a meter. All you want to know is if you have power at certain spot or not. Works great for testing fuses, power on one side and not the other = a bad fuse :)
