Duct Tape over Spoke Nipples Before Rim Band?
Getting back into dirt bikes, I seem to recall back in the day we would run a length of duct tape, cut to appropriate width around the rim over the spoke nipples before putting on the rim band. Anyone still do that?
|
I always put a dab of silicone on each nipple, allow it to tack up and then a few wraps of duct tape. No rim band. Keeps things clean and dry.
|
I haven't ever combined both but run duct tape instead on all my bikes as the bands have all worn out.

i used to do it the opposite way, i would use the rim band then some duct tape over the top of that. i never had any problems. now i been just using the rim bands though.

I put some 1/4-oz Harbor Freight stick-on wheel weights opposite the rim lock, inbetween the spoke nipples on both my tires. Over that I have a band of duct tape, and a rim strip on top of that.
Tape keeps the weights in place better than just the rim strip does. Rim strip pads the tube from the tape/nipples. I have some pics, but they're not online yet... I should get on that. |
Does anybody make cloth rim tape like the stuff used on bicycles that is wide enough for moto wheels. I've used it before and it's very nice. One wrap and you're good to go.

i just use electrical tape on mine and wrapped several times around.
i had a rim strip move away once and the nipple head wore through the inner tube. |
i have that on my mtb and don't see why it would not work on moto wheels.
it does not need to be any wider than covering the nipple heads. full inner rim width is really not needed. Quote:

This. Has worked for me for years.

Gorilla tape goes on all my spoked wheel rims at the first change of tires. Got a big pile of useless rubber rimstrips.

We always run a line of gorilla tape on our rims.
