Hi all,

Brand new member here. I'm looking for opinions on this bike:

This is what I got from the owner regarding maintenance:

The usual wear items, chain, sprockets, oil, filter, brake pads, tires. Rear shock failed at 40k miles. The rear wheel bearings were replaced at 50k miles (preventive maint). The battery was new in 2011. Fork springs and fork oil were new in early 2012. it has Racetech emulators in the forks. Can't think of anything else. Last valve check was at 48k miles or so. It should be done every 15k.

I'm wondering if I should be scared off by the high mileage? I've posted about this on beginning biker as well and got some good feedback but I figure there no such thing as too many opinions.

It would be a great deal for $3500! As long as it was garage kept, maintenance done properly and not wrecked... It should be fine. Look for corrosion from salt damage.

Be sure to ask about oil consumption.

Too many miles. You can find an untold number of bikes, including the SV line up, with less than 5000 miles on it. Remember, all the rubber, all the bearings, swingarm, steering head, everything is getting loose, and it just might end up costing more than the bike is worth in repairs over time. Like I mentioned in another thread, I sell my stuff no later than 60,000 miles, and with me riding them, are getting pretty tired, you can definitely feel looseness in the chassis, the engine isn't tight any more, and they are well on their way to getting worn out.

While that many miles on a Strom is not warn out, and it has many miles left on it. The miles would not scare me, the price would. I think you can find the same bike with less than half that many miles on it for a similar price. You may need to "fly and ride" it home. And you will need to be patient and do your homework in searching.

right now in nh cragislist there is a 07 650 with 6k miles with color matched hardbags. it is also 3500$.

i would go for that even though you might have to drive a few hrs.

It winter so you can wait i guess. i see quite a few of them with extremely low miles online . wait till spring. 40k miles for a high demand bike is okay but i see alot of stroms everywhere.
even though it not the mileage that scare , i figure if for the same money you can get a low mileage why get a highmileage one.
