Indian Chout

Interesting article on the Indian Chout. If you have never heard of a Chout, it is a hybrid built using a Scout frame and a Chief motor. Max Bubeck used one of these hybrids to set a speed record in 1948 and that record still stands today.

I've had a picture of a Chout on the Oregon Vintage Motorcyclists web site since I first created it in 1996. (the web site, not the Chout! Wish I had the means to build a Chout!)

(sorry about the lo-rez image, that's what I had available in those days)

Another common performance trick was to install Chief flywheels in a Scout engine.
The result was 57 cubic inches instead of 45. The Indian dealer in Eugene, Oregon ran one of these mods in his Scout for many years, and claims to have humiliated many a Harley rider with it.

How does a bigger flywheel add more cubic inches? I'm missing something here.

I'm guessing he means the bigger flywheel means there would be a longer stroke?
