GS battery on a GSA?

I'm currently in Oaxaca, Mexico at the dealer on my way to South America. The battery in my '12 GSA took a dump after 11 months and 10,000 miles (8,000 of which have been in the last two months since I left NYC).

The dealer here doesn't have the GSA battery (part number: 61 21 77 08 614) in stock, but does have the larger GS battery (part number: 61 21 77 24 073).

I didn't even know the GS/GSA used different batteries until now, but aside from the weight (~12 lbs. vs. ~6 lbs.) and probably cost (the GS battery is larger and thus a bit more expensive), is there any reason not to use the GS battery in my GSA?

I'm not running a lot of ancillary electrical equipment on my bike, really just GPS. I suspect the GSA got the smaller battery only to help pare weight, but I can't find electrical specs on both batteries, so I'm not sure if there are other differences.

The GS battery would allow me to get on the road today, the GSA battery would need to be shipped from the importer ad would not be here until Thursday at best. I'm inclined to go with the GS battery and get moving, but I wanted to be sure I wasn't going to introduce other issues.

Thanks all,

Matt

If it were me I would get the one in stock and hit the road and not worry about it. Unless you are staying there for free you will save enough in expenses if you need to replace it later.

GSA battery...11.8 AH $116
GS battery...12 AH $175

The GS one is lithium and a lot lighter, also a lot more money, either one should work just fine.

Those specs are from MAX BMW parts fiche

Are you sure JRP?

Unless I am missing something the GSA battery is the lighter one. I did not know BMW was using Lithium as OEM especially for that price ($116) but could be wrong.

as you already know, the oem battery is less than robust. i have a 2011 gsa, and my oem battery was showing numbers worse than yours. Only a year old, too. :huh

replaced with odyssey pc625. :clap

Thanks guys, went with the (larger, heavier, more powerful and more expensive, but in stock) GS battery. $3110 MXN with install and I'll be able to get back on the road tomorrow.

Can't say enough good things about Vesca Motors in Oaxaca. They're a new dealership and it's clear they're putting a lot of effort into creating an excellent customer experience, including the service manager letting me use his cell phone to call the US when my bank declined the foreign transaction...

They also did an amazing job of cleaning 8,000 miles of grunge off of it:

Very pleased!

Changed on a friend's bike last week:

This is the GSA battery, stock GS battery out of my bike, and the Odyssey 625 we put in his GSA.

Remove this tray and the larger standard GS battery fits.

Some trimming of the fins and the 612 fits.

But a seat bar trimming is in order.

Jim, thanks a lot. If I had known the OEM batteries were a weak point on these bikes, I certainly would have looked at the aftermarket options prior to leaving for LatAm. I've added it to my list of things to do when I get home.

For posterity, the specs on the GSA battery that came out of my bike and the GS battery that went in are as follows.

GSA:

BMW PN: 61.21-7 708 614 (61 21 7 708 614)
Mfr (Yuasa) PN: YTZ14S
Capacity: 11.2 Ah @ 10 hrs / 11.8 Ah @ 20 hrs
CCA: 230 A SAE / 150 A EN2
Std Charge: 1.1 A x 5-10 hrs
Quick Charge: 5.5 A x 1 hr
Weight: 6.93 lbs / 3.15 kg
Price (USD as of Jan '12): ~$115

GS:

BMW PN: 61.21-7 724 073 (61 21 7 724 073)
Mfr (Exide) PN: LTX14-BS
Capacity: 14 Ah @ 20 hrs (I'm assuming this is the 20 hr measurement, the battery isn't specific)
CCA: 170 A EN2 (again an assumption this is EN2 and not SAE)
Std Charge: 1.4 A x 5-10 hrs
Quick Charge: 7 A x 1 hr
Weight: 10.65 lbs / 4.84 kg
Price (USD as of Jan '12): ~$175

I couldn't find this information earlier, so hopefully this will help someone in the future.

Matt
