Thank You Nevada

Originally we had a trip planned to ride the Lost Coast over memorial weekend. But due to a massive manhunt in the area we were going to camp at and some issues with the cabin we were going to leave our tow rig at; we decided to check out Nevada and Eastern Oregon.

We decided to tow the bikes to Lahontan Reservoir for a few days of riding in that area then drive up to Lake Owyhee State Park in Oregon.

We loaded the bikes up after work and hit the road.

We drove all night taking shifts.

The next morning we were anxious to ride so we stopped near the Cali/Nevada border and rode up to this nice little lake.

After stretching our legs we loaded the bikes back on the trailer then headed to Reno for some lunch.

I was born and raised in California, so itís mandatory to stop and eat at In N Out. Mmmm Double Doubles.

Next Stop Lahontan ReservoirÖ..

Once at Lahontan we unloaded the bikes and went for a quick ride.

This place was great. You can camp on the beach and the scenery was cool.

Darren really enjoyed the sand on his DRZ. My sand skills suck so I just took pictures.

We rode for about an hour before sunset then headed back to camp for dinner and beers.

I tried to get some star trails.

My buddy was very happy with the TKC's on his Multi.

Back to the RR.

The plan for the next day was to ride into Virginia City on dirt roads. We rode out of camp and found the Old Emigrant Road along the Carson River. It was loose gravel here and there and wide enough for 2 cars.

The Carson River followed the road for awhile.

View along the Old Emigrant Road.
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...psc8a42749.jpg

After reaching the end of the Old Emigrant Road we crossed Hwy 50 and blazed up Six Mile Canyon towards Virginia City.

Six Mile canyon had lots of fun twisties.

Unfortunately the Ducati got too hot in this corner and went off the road. Thankfully both the rider and bike were okay. We made some repairs then continued on.
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps599cd349.jpg

We found a back way leading to VC. There were dirt roads all over the place.

After playing around on the dirt roads we made our way up to Virginia City.

We stopped for lunch at Virginia City Jerky and Smokehouse. The food was great. Get the tri-tip sandwich (sorry no pics of the food). Be prepared to wait in long lines on the weekend.

One of the owners said it would be okay to leave the bikes there while we wandered around town. Very cool people.
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps57ad98be.jpg

So after lunch we explored the town.

http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps353584df.jpg

We checked out the Virginia City Museum for 3 bucks. There is a lot of history in this town and a lot of the silver and gold mines ran underneath the town.

After wandering through the town we were eager to get back on the bikes and ride. Next up dirt roads and open pit mines.

We did go for the Lost Coast - We figured it was just one man and what are the odds....The rain on Sunday was the biggest buzz kill...

Nice RR so far - looks dry!

Ricky Chuck 05-29-2013 10:09 PM

My dad always wanted to go to this town for the oddest reason...he only watched two shows when I was growing up...Gunsmoke and Bonanza. I got him to Dodge City several years ago :)...never made it to Virginia City. Subscribed.

I am looking forward to seeing what you found on your trip. There is so much to explore in NV! :D

Great pics of your trip. I plan on getting down to the Lost Coast later this Summer or next spring.

We didn't even scratch the surface on all of the places to ride.

westcoasttrekker 05-30-2013 08:08 PM

Open country and open pit mines.

Up to this point we were so excited to have ridden around on dirt roads and not encounter one gate with the dreaded Road Closed sign. We would have been happy with what we rode before we stopped for lunch, but the riding just got better.

It was cool to see these open pit mines all over the place.
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...pse085d955.jpg

We took the long way back to our camp at Lahontan Reservoir.

After the Dayton Toll Road we worked our way back up along the Old Emigrant towards camp. Along the way we found another side road to explore which led to another open pit mine.

http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps93a51030.jpg

After riding around the area for a bit Dave on the Ducati was battling an injury and went back to camp. Darren and I figured it would be awhile until we would get a chance to ride Nevada again, so we took the really long way back to camp. We rode for a few hours around the entire Lahontan Reservoir in the moonlight. Full moon, dirt roads and the smell of desert sage, awesome!

We got back to camp around 10:30pm, had dinner and a few beers then crashed out for the night.

Tracks for the day.
150 miles.

Lets keep this ball rolling.

Lake Owyhee State Park Oregon

We got a late start the next morning for Oregon, but made up time on the road. I have always loved traveling since I was a kid. So even though the drive from Nevada to Oregon was mostly empty I still thoroughly enjoyed it.

Itís much more comfortable in the GMC than on the KLR.

We arrived at Lake Owyhee and setup camp along the river. It was less crowded than the campground.

Sunset at the lake.

Because of the late start from Nevada we would have to wait until morning to explore the area.

Oregon tracks
165 miles.
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps48ee478e.jpg

Once back at camp we loaded up and headed home due to some ass clown trying to get into my house while my family was home sleeping.

Aside from that we had an awesome trip. Maybe we got lucky, but everyone in Nevada was really nice to us. There seemed to be places to ride everywhere we went. We didnít have to worry about road closed gates like we do in the Puget Sound area. Also, the weather was perfect and the scenery was beautiful.

Oregon was another great place to ride. I would like to go back and spend some more time camping in the hills off of the bike and exploring the area. It was amazing to see these rock formations out amongst the miles of rolling hills.

Iím thinking that I would like to check out Alvord Desert and Steens Mountain next.

Thanks for reading my RR. If youíre interested in riding these areas and need some GPS tracks let me know.
