heat discoloration on stainless is easily removed with a scotchbrite pad or by sanding lightly. I would use an angle grinder and a 1/16" wheel, then sand the edge with a polyfans 80 grit.

Remove the gas cap and roll a KLR under it. Re-install the cap on the KLR. Problem solved for less than the price of a new roundell thingie.
