I just changed the Iridium plugs in a VW 1.4 and two of the four plugs had no centre electrode left.. they don't last forever. They cost $43.

Have you checked the valve clearances? I rebuilt a MK11 LeMans years ago and had these symptoms. The gaps closed up and when hot were too tight. Just like Airheads noisy valves are happy valves.

I have used the gearbox to centre the plate. Don't tighten the bolts on the flywheel too much then slip the gearbox on and with a bit of wiggling it will fit. Ease the box back off and do the bolts...
