Yeah, I made the same mistake getting the big National Cycle shield (biggest one they made for the Dyna).
Turned out all I needed was lowers and a small to medium shield to handle the buffetting.

I have had no issues with water, and get caught in rain occasionally (I don't pull over for it). I believe all the wires down there have sealed connectors.
