Be careful with the slide hammer. The stakes are high if you crack head. Try small vice grips clamped to the socket and pull & wiggle by hand while tapping side to side with a small hammer.

You'll like it. One advantage over the manometer or mercury sticks is portability. If you want to check balance above idle under load you can prop it up by your speedo and go for a ride.
