i've diassembled the top section with a hammer and there does appear to be a component between the ground pin and the HV coil. its broken now so i can't test it but i'll disassemble my other broken...

when i changed mine i changed the pivot bearings because they looked a bit worn. i didn't do the final drive because i'm lazy but it will probably fail when i am far from civilization....

normally i ride my bike to warm up the oil, drain the oil, eat lunch and then do the valves. the engine isn't hot when i do them but not cold either. how much difference would 40C be compared to 18C...
