Doesn't feel any weaker to me but I'm not an aggressive rider. I really can't detect any difference in acceleration and it does reduce RPMs by 200 at cruising speeds. It still passes cars with gusto....

I went the 17t route last spring and very happy for all of the reasons stated above. Can't tell any difference in performance.

Probably not the way to go though if you are running chunky tires off...

I went up one tooth on the front sprocket. Reduced RPM by 200 and makes for a much better road bike when running over 60 mph with no noticeable decline in engine response.

But my T800 is a roadie...

Just make sure you get the correct one for your bike- (roadie or XC.) and it can't be lowered
