So far the overwhelming opinion is just a piston failure - manufacturer's defect or otherwise - can't say for sure. Doesn't look like any of the valves were hitting the piston or anything else...

I was told that the stock compression is 11:1 and that this bike has a Wiseco 12:1 piston.

I don't think the bike has a timing chain, just the cam chain - I just looked through the service manual...
