I believe there were several upgrades with the ZRX1200 from running gear to the ZZR1200 derived motor. The older ZX11 based engines may have some oiling issues though I've never seen one go bad.

I would start with an adventure style single. Anything from a KLR to a G650. I'm not sure KTM is any more reliable (or cheaper to maintain) than a BMW...
