I did the same thing and have put 40,000 trouble-free miles on it since. Very easy and cheap fix. I think I remember having to drill out a plastic rivet to get the case apart, but I might be wrong.

The valves could have been out of adjustment...

The valves could have been out of adjustment before it sat. I agree with Stretch. Check the valves and then clean the carb. It will probably make it run a lot more smoothly and quietly.
