I know a guy who has doube that, on a 1986 xt600 he purchased new and used for commuting, so pretty easy riding on his part I guess.

Backfire is lean. It can be as simple as a leaky exhaustsystem, it doesnt take much.

Air will come in, and cause the unburnt gasses in the exhasut to ignite, hence the backfire.

Modern o/x-ring 428 chains have a lot of tensile strength, but I'd still go 520.

See if you can source all new sprockets, and a well known, proven chain, like a DID vx2...
