I did it to my /6 many moons ago. I believe it was about 1/2" and seem to recall taking from both top and bottom. Hopefully someone with more recent experience and better memory than I can chime in.

I had a similar situation when I changed exhaust and intake on an otherwise stock r75. Upping the main jet resolved the issue. I believe it was +5 from stock.

Check the v notch as stated above. Get the oil out of there! Same happened to me on my new to me GS. The hypoid swelled the rubber in the driveshaft necessitating replacement.
