Bleeding the brakes is the same procedure no matter how the air got in there.

If you haven't done so already, it may be a good time to completely change out the fluid anyway as it is 2 years old.

Odd, my 2011 will do the first 2 gears easily. Sometimes it will even pull 3rd. This is especially true when i get down to lower altitude.

Typically 3rd isn't the "OMG look at the pretty sky" type...
