I agreed with the pain and whined a lot my first 1100 mile trip. Then I decided I was trying to be too comfortable.
I just used my Trax panniers for the next 1000 mile trip. Worked a lot better....

I kind of like the no nanny aspect. I have locked the front tire twice and slid the rear once. Probably the TKC's don't help.
The bike is stable with out ABS and I don't see it as a great loss.
