The carbs should stop the flow of gas if the petcocks are left on. If they don't they should be fixed. There are a couple of simple things that may happen, dirt, peeling tank liner on the needle....

Agree with SS. Static balancing of pistons and rods (both ends) is doable at home. The dynamic balancing of the crankshaft is another matter altogether. I don't think I actually understand it well...

Nah. I think replacing engines that were ruined by dirty gas holding the float needle open would be enough reason to use petcocks.
