Thanks for the replays, but I just spent a hour reading up and figured out my problem. It is technique. If I slow down my kicking, I can find TDC, then a slight bump on the kicker to get it past TDC...

an air leak can make it run rich and make it idle fast. Not sure it would account for 1000 extra RPMs, but it could explain why it feels faster. Check the carb/manifold boots
