I've seen those online but not in person. I guess they'd be likely to fold themselves in depending on the angle the bike went down? maybe they'd break away without damaging the valve covers?

+1 on the leatherlyke bags. I had a bad put down on my Magna in '08. Shattered collar bone, two surgeries & 5 months of recovery for me, but the Leatherlyke bags & my crashbar kept the bike damage...

I found the V-strom & KLR to be friendly, versatile & easy to ride. Both are pretty roomy which will be important with your inseam length.
