I used to go through levers like they were water. Since I put good quality handguards on I've not had to replace a single lever...so yes, it's worth upgrading :lol3.

All the pre-packed bearing kits are China sourced. The only way I know of to ensure non-Chinese is to buy OEM-Yamaha. Some Chinese bearings can be good quality...but it's hard to tell.

As far as fuel stops, I think the longest stretch is probably about 70 miles when you're going through the Big Sur area. Plan on getting gas at Gorda, and it'll be around $6.50/gal...but it's worth...

I still don't think you'd be happy with the 17/18 combo--the XT's still a lot heavier than a CT110, won't give you that mini bike feel. I think it's wheel set up is just about perfect for the package...
