No, it doesn't have to be steel, but if it's Aluminum, it has to have larger tubes for the same strength because it is only 1/3 the strength of steel. Look at the size of the tubes on the S10 below...

It's a blast, just did a couple 7 hours at Pacific Raceway and signed up for a 24hr at Oregon Raceway Park, which is the twistiest track I've seen. It has a section called the "halfpipe"! :evil
