I think the great stuff idea is a good one I wish I thought of it. I would still try the blue sleeping pad foam It's dense enough the you would only compressit about 1/4 of an inch and it's cheap...

I've been really happy with "alpinestar no step" trials boots they close with three buckles. and have all the shin armor that one could want and the bottom part feels like a good pair of hiking boots.
