I believe you need to start the motor

To get the coolant hot and open the thermostat temp valve.

I would recommend fork oil

You could have the pressure plate bolts undone

Knocking inside the clutch cover. A swift check in the clutch assy will shed some light. Good on you to leave it at once.

Could it be the pickup sensor?

A friend lately reported a faulty pickup sensor. Symptom was cutting out after getting hot. Replacing pickup sensor cured this.

My 2003 clutch slave piston was aluminum. The same goes for my 2006 990 and a motor 2008 I purchased.

My ITG filter also touches the underpan of the seat.

I fabricated the filter base and tried to make it sit as forward as possible but it still touches the seat underpan. I don't think this is important.
