I would (and this is what I always do) change both bearings and re-shim, so that you only get your hands dirty once :)

The roller bearing can be supplied from bearing shops for ~ 15$ around here....

IMHO, the problem could be related to not enough fuel or perhaps bad spark plug wires. Yes, it can happen, and it's more probably on such an old mileage bike like yours.

They come for both spoke(hp&gsa) and cast wheels(the rest of 1200 hexhead models).
