I'd be concerned that straitening the bars would weaken the metal. Thus lessened in rigidity, the next fall would bend the bars into the plastic.

Likely. Stretches of the hard pack were mud filled ruts covered with a thin crust. Looks like dirt until it eats a tire. The badlands hill formation was a fun climb also.
