NX's are great! I've had mine longer than you. Bought mine from first owner in 93, and currently it has just over 25,000 mi.
All stock except for my custom skid plate, and various mounting brackets...

Sounds just like mine did when my CDI "bit-the-dust".

When it's in a "failed-state" try trouble shooting the CDI.

I replaced my original CDI in 2009 with 14,470 miles on my 1990 NX.

I currently have just over 26,000 miles and the replaced CDI is still running ok.

Bad CDI

When my CDI went bad, it quit on side of road. After about 15 - 30 min's, it started the bike ok, and I rode it home.
Next time it failed to start the bike right in my driveway. Next day it started...

I have a Duro HF904 on rear.. It's a 130/90-16
Slightly larger, but fits ok. Makes the bike a little higher so the bike leans slightly more on side stand.

Testing for shorts

The only sure way to check for shorts is to disconnect each end of a wire run, and measure the "isolated" wire to ground.

If you can determine the specific wire that's shorted, you can inspect it...
