Change the pad or shoe material. I have one of the worst rear brakes made, a Ulysses. Like stepping on a 4x4. Changed to EBC HH and way better feel and modulation.

Remove the plate. If the bolt sticks out, use a sharp chisel and small hammer and turn the exposed bolt to unscrew it out. Usually the tension is lost with breaking the bolt and they spin out easily....
