Ouch! that's my biggest fear about going fast in the woods... Sounds like a broken leg and frame was actually pretty lucky compared to what it coulda been.

I always buy steel sprockets. They last maybe 10x longer and cost about 40 - 50% less. You can't feel any diff in the weight or suspension action, unless maybe your a pro racer.

Pirelli MT43 is DOT, lasts long time and works great. But only 18." Great on the ktm woods bike, but I don't think I'd run one on the DR anyway.

yup. I dont kknow why all the rage about emulators. I have them and they are better than stock, but it's still a crappy old damper rod fork. no amount of adjusting fixes that for my taste.

I bet. I had a 2001 LC4 and it had the best suspension of anything I've owned in the last 40 yrs. Sorta wish I still had it sometimes.

I'm wondering if a modern MX or enduro shock would bolt right on the '96-'14 DR650. A used one might be a low budget way to get a big upgrade.
