I'm no expert, but wouldn't a diode between the heater(s) and "HI" & "LOW" switches ( 2 diodes --- 1 for each circuit) do the trick? ... I reckon that's allow the correct indicator to operate when...

I had my tank off a few days ago, couldn't allign the rear bolts, as if the tank had stretched by maybe 13mm. Having recently seen pix of a tank with cracks in that area I elected not to "shoehorn"...

just drop some thin oil on it and work it for a bit .... if the noise reduces or ceases, you've found the cause ... then maybe get some engine oil or similar in there ... should do the trick.
