I'd take that bet. The key battery was most likely fine. They were getting RFI from the gas pump. This is pretty common, especially at speedpass type pumps.

Pinlock is obviously the best option. I have found that Scott anti-fog spray works pretty well. The big downside of the Scott stuff is you will need to apply it daily.
