Heat and a sledge hammer. Put the puller on there and put as much tension as possible. Heat the knuckle (or whatever the ball joint is pressed into) and then smack the side of it with the sledge.

Can you ditch the front boards, install an all thread lag screw into the floor joists, then support the shelves with all thread?
